Before Midnight (2013)

Before Midnight is Richard Linklater’s sequel to Before Sunrise (1005) and Before Sunset (2004) so hopefully this puts an end to it.

In the first film, Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) walk the streets of Paris over the course of an evening and enjoy stimulating conversation. It’s a beautiful, thoughtful film about two young people who enjoy each other for more than their physical attributes. Almost two decades later the same characters are in Greece where they continue to talk about stuff.

I love the first movie as it was refreshing to find two original characters stimulated by their brains. I’m not crazy about sequels and rarely do they add more to the original work and this is another example. At least make the character different. I would have cast Nicolas Cage as Jesse, so Celine could comment on how much he’s changed. Ethan Hawke was perfect as a young bohemian searching for answers, but as an older “man of letters,” he needs to be more refined or at least tuck in his shirt. And he has to stop talking. Julie Delpie is lovely but her English is still horrible. Her rounding of vowel sounds makes you want to put something in her mouth at dinner and keep it there. Maybe Celine would have been more interesting with laryngitis this time.

I honestly didn’t find the conversation that insightful or thought provoking. These are two forty something’s dealing with kids and life, and they just sort of whine about stuff and not have sex. Maybe Jesse and Celine are not really attracted to each other. Let’s be honest, Ethan Hawke looks like he runs a thrift shop and Delpie, while still lovely, could probably afford some aerobics. The critics seemed to love it though, so what do I know. I think Before Midnight would have worked better as a silent film.
